Kindroid is the power-user’s choice, where you can shape every detail of your companion. Both can be a boyfriend, both have voice calls, and both have iOS, Android and web apps.

Memory and personality

Kindroid’s memory is strong: layered long-term memory, journals and a backstory field, often ranked alongside Nomi’s as best-in-class. You can set “key memories” so the facts that matter most are never lost.

Replika has a memory and diary system, but its memory is moderate, and users often report it forgetting details.

Customization

Kindroid gives you more control than almost any other app. You write his backstory, set key memories, tune how he speaks, pick his voice and generate selfies. You can create companions of any gender.

Privacy and safety

Kindroid has no reported breaches. Its data policy specifics weren’t verified in our research.

Replika is run by Luka, Inc., which Italy’s data protection authority fined €5 million in 2025 (decided April, announced May) for GDPR violations, including lacking a legal basis for processing, poor transparency and no age verification before February 2023. A further probe into model training was reported.

Ease of use

Replika is one of the easiest companion apps to start with. Download it, set up your companion and start talking. Its polished mobile apps and supportive tone make it a gentle first companion.

Kindroid has a learning curve. Its many settings are its strength, but beginners can find them complex, and the thin free tier means you’ll want to commit before you’ve explored everything.

If you want to test before you pay, the two free tiers feel very different.

Kindroid’s free tier is thin, and sources disagree on exactly what’s included: one or two Kindroids, either a daily message cap or a lighter model, a small lifetime audio allowance and few or no selfies. You can get a feel for the customization and memory, but not for long.

Replika’s free tier is friendship only. You can chat with basic features, but the boyfriend relationship status and voice calls need a subscription, so you can’t test it as a romantic partner without paying.
