Mostly, yes: a reputable AI boyfriend app is about as safe as any other online service, as long as you’re careful about what you share and how you pay. The risks are real but manageable, and they’re rarely the sci-fi kind. They’re about data, money and how the relationship makes you feel.
Here’s what to watch for and how to protect yourself.
Risk 1: your chats are data
Everything you type is sent to the company’s servers, where it’s processed and stored. That makes privacy the biggest practical risk. Some apps have a poor record:
- Muah AI was breached in September 2024. About 1.9 million accounts were exposed, including email addresses tied to the prompts people had written, and extortion attempts were reported afterwards. Read our Muah AI review.
- CrushOn AI, EVA AI and Talkie all received warnings in Mozilla’s 2024 Privacy Not Included review of romantic chatbots.
- EVA AI’s policy says text and voice messages are used to develop its AI, with no opt-out described.
- Replika’s developer was fined €5 million by Italy’s data protection authority in 2025 for GDPR violations.

Risk 2: money
The second most common problem is spending more than you meant to.
- Token systems. Candy AI, OurDream AI and DreamBF charge separately for images, voice and video. A cheap subscription can turn into a much bigger monthly bill. Our Candy AI pricing guide shows how it adds up.
- Weekly plans. Kupid AI and Chai push weekly billing, which costs far more over a month than a monthly plan.
- Lookalike sites. Lookalike domains have imitated Lovescape and OurDream AI. Only pay on an app’s official site or in the official app store.

Risk 3: your wellbeing
An AI boyfriend is designed to be warm, attentive and always available. For many people that’s comforting. For some, it can crowd out sleep, friends or other relationships, or become the only place they turn when things are hard.
