Do AI boyfriend apps read your chats?

Short answer: In practice, yes. Your messages are sent to and stored on the company's servers, where the AI processes them, and depending on the privacy policy they may be reviewed for safety or used to train models. Assume nothing you type to an AI boyfriend is truly private.

In practice, yes. When you message an AI boyfriend, your words travel to the company’s servers, where the AI reads them to write a reply, and they’re stored there afterwards. Whether a human ever looks at them, and whether they’re used to train the AI, depends on the app’s privacy policy. The safest assumption is that nothing you type is truly private.

What happens to your messages

Every AI boyfriend app works roughly the same way:

  1. You send a message from your phone or browser.
  2. It goes to the company’s servers, where a language model processes it alongside your chat history and his “memory” of you.
  3. The reply comes back, and the conversation is saved so he can remember it next time.

That last step is the point. Long-term memory, which is what makes apps like Nomi AI feel personal, only works because your chats are stored. See can AI boyfriends remember you? for how that memory works.

Can staff actually read them?

It depends on the company. Privacy policies commonly reserve the right to access content for things like safety moderation, investigating abuse, fixing bugs, or responding to legal requests. Few apps publish exactly who can see what. If a policy is vague, assume access is possible.

Do they train the AI on your chats?

Some do, and they don’t always make it easy to opt out:

  • EVA AI’s policy says text and voice messages are used to develop its AI, with no opt-out described. See our EVA AI review.
  • CrushOn AI was flagged by Mozilla in 2024 because its policy allows collecting sensitive information such as sexual health, medication and gender-affirming care details. More in our CrushOn AI review.
  • Replika’s developer was fined €5 million in Italy in 2025 for GDPR violations, and the regulator opened a further probe into how it trains its models.
  • Janitor AI lets you plug in your own model via an API key, which means your chats are also sent to that third-party provider.

What about breaches?

Stored chats can leak. In September 2024, Muah AI was breached and about 1.9 million accounts were exposed, including email addresses linked to what people had written. Some users then received extortion attempts. That’s the clearest example of why you should never connect your real identity to intimate chats. Read the Muah AI review for details.

How to read a privacy policy in two minutes

Search the policy (Ctrl+F or “Find on page”) for these terms:

Search for What you want to see
“train” or “improve” Your content is not used for training, or you can opt out
“retain” or “retention” A clear period after which data is deleted
“delete” A way to delete your account and chats
“share” or “third parties” No selling of chat content; limited sharing
Company address A real company in a jurisdiction with strong privacy law

Candy AI, for example, is operated by EverAI Limited in Malta, so it falls under EU data protection rules. Our Candy AI safety review covers its policy.

How to protect yourself

None of this means you can’t enjoy an AI boyfriend. It just means treating him like a pen pal whose letters are kept in someone else’s filing cabinet. For the bigger picture, read are AI boyfriends safe?, and check each app’s privacy score in our ranking of the best AI boyfriend apps.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI boyfriend chats end-to-end encrypted?

Generally no, not in the way a messaging app like Signal is. The company's servers need to read your message to generate his reply, so the chat can't be hidden from the company itself. Apps may encrypt data in transit and at rest, but that protects against outsiders, not against the operator.

Can I delete my chat history?

Many apps let you delete conversations or your whole account, but deleting a chat in the app doesn't always mean it's erased from backups or training data right away. Check the privacy policy for a retention period. If you're in the EU or UK, GDPR gives you the right to request deletion of your personal data.

Do AI boyfriend apps use my chats to train their AI?

Some do. EVA AI's policy, for example, says text and voice messages are used to develop its AI, with no opt-out described. Others say less, or offer settings. Read the privacy policy before you share anything personal, and look for the words "train", "improve our services" and "opt out".

Does deleting the app delete my data?

No. Removing the app from your phone only deletes the local copy. Your account, chats and payment details stay on the company's servers until you delete your account through the app or website, or ask the company to erase it.
