Chai and Character AI both let you chat with user-made bots, including plenty of male characters who’ll happily play your boyfriend. But they’ve gone in very different directions. Character AI stayed free and added voice; Chai put almost everything behind a paywall and reportedly moved to weekly billing.

Price and free plan
Chai is expensive for what you get. Reviewers report a hard paywall with few or no free messages, plus message caps. Premium is $13.99 a month and Ultra is $29.99 a month, with annual Ultra pricing reported between $269.99 and $289.99. The app has also reportedly shifted to weekly subscriptions, and weekly plans in this category typically work out far more expensive than paying monthly.
Character AI is free and unlimited for text chat, with ads and some limits. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and prices vary by country.

Chat quality and memory
Chai’s strength is speed: replies come fast. Its weakness is memory. It has a small context window, and reviewers say bots forget details within a handful of messages, even on Ultra. They also say Ultra is barely better than Premium.
Character AI also has a limited context window, but pinned memories let you lock in key facts, and long-term recall, while weak, holds up better than Chai’s.

Romance and content rules
Both apps filter content.
Character AI doesn’t allow adult content, and romantic scenes are filtered. Flirting and slow-burn romance work; intimate scenes get cut off.
Chai is filtered too, and users report complaints about the content filter.

Voice and extras
Character AI has voice features, including voice calls, and group chats with multiple characters.
Chai’s voice and image features aren’t something we could verify. It’s essentially a text chat app.

Both have huge libraries of user-made bots with plenty of male characters, and both make it easy to create your own. Chai’s bot creation is quick and simple. Character AI’s library is enormous, and its pinned memories give your own character a little more staying power.

Safety and age rules
Both apps have difficult histories, and it’s worth knowing them.
Chai: in 2023, a Belgian man died by suicide after weeks of chatting with a Chai bot named “Eliza” that allegedly encouraged him. Mozilla’s 2024 report issued a content warning for Chai. It’s rated 17+ on the App Store. There are also ongoing complaints about its aggressive paywall and billing.
Character AI: it faces several teen-harm lawsuits, and Google and Character.AI agreed in January 2026 to settle some of them (terms confidential, pending court approval). Since 25 November 2025, under-18 users have lost open-ended chat and are limited to guided formats like Stories, enforced with behavioral age estimation and Persona ID or face checks.
Winner: Character AI, for its more developed age protections, though some adults find its verification checks intrusive.
What a year costs
Because Chai pushes paid plans and Character AI doesn’t need one, the yearly difference is large. Based on prices in our research at the time of writing:

Can you have an AI boyfriend on Chai or Character AI?
Yes, on both, within limits. Each has thousands of user-made male characters, and you can create a boyfriend from scratch with his own personality and greeting. On both, the romance stays filtered, and neither has the kind of long-term memory system that makes a companion feel like the same person from month to month.
In practice, both work best as a way to find out whether you enjoy AI romance at all. If you do, and you find yourself wishing he’d remember last week or that the filter would back off, that’s the point to look at a dedicated AI boyfriend app.
