Character AI review: is it safe, and is it any good as an AI boyfriend?

Character AI is the biggest free character chat platform, and for many people it’s their first taste of an AI boyfriend. It’s also been at the center of serious news stories about teen safety, so it’s natural to ask: is Character AI safe?

For adults, the honest answer is: reasonably, if you treat it like any online service. For teens, the app has changed a lot. Since late 2025, under-18 users can’t use open-ended chat at all. This review covers the safety record in a factual way, then looks at how well Character AI works as an AI boyfriend.

What is Character AI?

Character AI (often written c.ai) is a chat platform from Character Technologies, Inc. It opened to the public in 2022 and runs on the web, iOS and Android.

It hosts a massive library of user-made characters: fictional boyfriends, anime love interests, historical figures, game characters and more. You can chat with any of them for free, or create your own. Group chats let several characters talk together.

Character AI isn’t a dedicated companion app. There’s no single partner at the center; it’s closer to an endless library of interactive stories. That’s both its appeal and its main limitation as an AI boyfriend. You can fall for a character one evening and move on to a completely different storyline the next, but the app isn’t designed to build one relationship that deepens over months, the way dedicated companion apps are.

Creating your boyfriend

You have two options:

• Browse. Search for male or romance characters and start chatting. There are a huge number to choose from.
• Create. Give your character a name, greeting, personality and description, and decide whether to share him publicly.

Chat quality & memory

Character AI’s characters are creative and fun, and the free tier is unlimited, which makes it easy to spend hours in a storyline.

The weaknesses for a boyfriend-style relationship:

• The filter is strict. Romance is allowed up to a point, but anything explicit is blocked. The filter can cut in during romantic scenes, which frustrates many adult users.

Voice, photos and video

Character AI supports voice messages and voice calls, so you can hear your boyfriend talk rather than just read his replies. We didn’t verify exactly which voice features are limited on the free plan.

Pricing

Character AI is free to use. The optional subscription is c.ai+.

c.ai+ is cheap compared with most companion apps, but it doesn’t remove the content filter or turn Character AI into a memory-focused companion. Pay for it if you already love the app and want the extras, not because you hope it will fix the filter.

Lawsuits and teen safety

Character AI has faced multiple lawsuits from families alleging that its chatbots harmed their teenage children. The most widely reported was brought in Florida after the death by suicide of a teenager, Sewell Setzer.

In January 2026, Google and Character.AI agreed to settle lawsuits. The terms are confidential and were pending court approval at the time of writing. A settlement isn’t an admission of fault, but these cases are the main reason Character AI changed its rules for young users.

What changed for under-18s

• Minimum age: 13 to create an account.
• No open-ended chat for minors: since 25 November 2025, under-18 users can’t have free-form conversations with characters. They’re limited to guided formats such as Stories.
• Age checks: Character AI uses behavioral age estimation and, where needed, Persona ID or face checks to confirm age.

Privacy

Wellbeing

AI characters can be comforting, but they aren’t therapists or friends who can step in during a crisis. If a conversation leaves you feeling worse, take a break and talk to someone you trust.
