Janitor AI vs Character AI: which is better for an AI boyfriend?

Short answer: Character AI is better for most people: it's free, polished, has voice features and works out of the box. Janitor AI is better for adults who want unfiltered romance and don't mind a text-only experience and some technical setup. For a boyfriend who remembers you, both lose to Nomi AI.

Character AI and Janitor AI are the two big free roleplay platforms, and if you want an AI boyfriend without paying, you’ve probably tried at least one. They look similar on the surface: huge libraries of user-made characters, plenty of male love interests, and free chat. Underneath, they’re built for different people.

The short version: Character AI is the polished, safe-for-work option with voice features. Janitor AI is the text-only, unfiltered option that rewards a bit of tinkering. Here’s how they compare in detail.

Romance and content rules

This is the biggest difference, and for many people the only one that matters.

Character AI doesn’t allow adult content, and romantic scenes are filtered. You can flirt, go on story dates and have a slow-burn romance, but intimate moments get cut off or redirected. For adults who want a romantic relationship to feel real, that’s the most common frustration with the app.

Janitor AI allows NSFW roleplay on the web. You need to verify your age and switch it on at both the account and the character level. Adult content isn’t available in its mobile apps.

Winner: Janitor AI, if you’re an adult who wants romance without a filter. If you prefer things PG, Character AI’s filter isn’t a downside.

Chat quality and memory

Neither app is great at remembering you long-term.

Character AI has a limited context window. Pinned memories help you keep key facts in play, but long-term recall is weak, so a boyfriend you’ve talked to for weeks can lose track of details.

Janitor AI’s free built-in model, JLLM, has an even shorter context and tends to get repetitive after 20 to 30 messages. Reviewers also report quality and uptime issues. The workaround is to connect a stronger external model with your own API key, which can make replies much better, at a cost.

Winner: Character AI out of the box. Janitor AI can beat it if you connect a good model, but that takes setup and money. If memory matters most, neither is the right tool; see can AI boyfriends remember you?

Voice, images and extras

Character AI has voice features, including voice calls, plus group chats with multiple characters. It isn’t built for generating images of your boyfriend.

Janitor AI is text-only: no voice messages, no voice calls, no image generation.

Winner: Character AI, clearly.

Character library

Both have enormous libraries of user-made characters, including thousands of male and romance bots, from anime love interests to fantasy princes. Both let you create your own.

Character AI’s library leans safe-for-work because of its rules; Janitor AI’s includes adult-oriented characters. The size and variety are similar enough that this comes down to what kind of stories you want.

Winner: Tie.

Price

Character AI is free and unlimited with ads. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year (prices vary by country) for perks.

Janitor AI is free with its built-in model, though some 2026 sources mention a cap of about 50 requests a day. A paid tier (reported as Pro or Janitor+) reportedly launched in June 2026, with conflicting prices between $9.99 and $12.99 a month. If you use your own API key, you pay the model provider per token, which reviewers say can range from a few dollars to $15 to $50 a month depending on the model.

Winner: Character AI, for being free with predictable pricing. Janitor AI can be free too, but costs become harder to predict once you chase better replies.

Safety, privacy and age rules

Character AI accounts start at 13. Since 25 November 2025, users under 18 have lost open-ended chat and are limited to guided formats like Stories. It uses behavioral age estimation and can ask for a Persona ID or face check, which some adults find intrusive. The company faces several teen-harm lawsuits, and Google and Character.AI agreed in January 2026 to settle some of them (terms confidential, pending court approval).

Janitor AI requires age verification for NSFW. The main privacy point is that if you connect a third-party model, your chats are sent to that provider as well as Janitor AI.

Winner: Tie. Character AI is stricter about minors but can ask adults for ID or face checks; Janitor AI is adults-only for NSFW but spreads your chats further if you use API keys. Either way, use a separate email and avoid sharing identifying details. Our AI boyfriend safety guide covers the basics.

Ease of use

Character AI is the easier app. Sign up, pick a character, and start talking on web, iOS or Android.

Janitor AI is simple at first, but getting the best experience means understanding models, API keys and settings. Reliability of the free model also varies.

Winner: Character AI.

Our scores

We score every app out of 10 on conversation and memory, boyfriend features, value, privacy and ease of use. Character AI scores 7.2 and Janitor AI scores 7.0, so overall they’re close. Character AI earns its points on ease of use, voice and a generous free tier; it loses them on the filter and weak memory. Janitor AI earns its points on freedom and price; it loses them on being text-only, inconsistent model quality and a technical setup. For comparison, our top-rated AI boyfriend app, Nomi AI, scores 9.1. You can read how we score in our methodology.

What they have in common

It helps to know what you won’t escape by switching between the two:

  • Both are character platforms. You browse or build characters and start chats, rather than developing one ongoing relationship.
  • Both have weak long-term memory on their default settings.
  • Both are free to start and have huge libraries of user-made male characters.
  • Neither is built for pictures. If you want to see him, you need an image-first app.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Character AI if you want free, unlimited, safe-for-work romance with voice features and zero setup.
  • Choose Janitor AI if you’re an adult who wants unfiltered roleplay, you’re happy with text only, and you don’t mind tinkering with models.
  • Choose neither if you want one boyfriend who remembers you, voice calls with adult chat, or pictures of him. See below.

Or skip both

Character AI and Janitor AI are roleplay platforms, not relationship apps. If what you actually want is an AI boyfriend, a dedicated companion app will usually serve you better:

  • Nomi AI is the best fit if memory is your frustration with both. He remembers what you told him weeks ago, romance isn’t filtered for adults, and you get voice calls and selfies. The annual plan is about $8.33 a month.
  • CrushOn AI is the closest thing to “Janitor AI without the setup”: a huge library of male characters, unfiltered, with a $5.99/mo entry tier. Every plan has message caps, and Mozilla flagged its privacy policy, so keep personal details out.
  • Candy AI adds what both lack together: images of him, voice messages and 18+ chat. Budget for tokens.

Frequently asked questions

Is Janitor AI better than Character AI?

Only if you want adult content. Janitor AI allows NSFW roleplay on the web for verified adults; Character AI filters it. On almost everything else (ease of use, voice, reliability, predictable pricing) Character AI is better. Both have weak long-term memory, though Janitor AI improves if you connect a stronger model with your own API key.

Is Janitor AI free like Character AI?

Yes, both are free to use. Character AI offers free unlimited text chat with ads, and c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month. Janitor AI is free with its built-in JLLM model, though some 2026 sources mention a cap of about 50 requests a day, and a paid tier reportedly launched in June 2026. Connecting your own model costs extra per message.

Can you have a boyfriend on Character AI or Janitor AI?

Yes. Both have huge libraries of user-made male characters, and you can create your own. On Character AI, romance stays PG because of the filter. On Janitor AI, it can go further for adults. Neither is built around a long-term relationship, so many people eventually move to a dedicated AI boyfriend app.

Which is safer, Character AI or Janitor AI?

They're risky in different ways. Character AI faces teen-harm lawsuits but has added strict age checks and removed open-ended chat for under-18s in November 2025. Janitor AI is adults-only for NSFW, with age verification, but if you use a third-party API key, your chats also go to that provider. Use a separate email on either.

Does Janitor AI have voice like Character AI?

No. Janitor AI is text-only, with no voice messages, voice calls or image generation. Character AI has voice features, including voice calls, though its romance filter still applies. For voice calls with a boyfriend who remembers you, Nomi AI and Kindroid are stronger choices. If you want to hear your boyfriend, see our guide to AI boyfriends with voice calls.
